Dr Robert Bothwell

Specialising in Addition, Mood Disorders, Anxiety, Depression, Bipolar Mood Disorder and Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder

Dr. Robert Bothwell is a Psychiatrist with a special interest in Addiction, as well as Dual Disorders, Anxiety, Depression, Bipolar Mood Disorder and Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder.

Dr. Bothwell gained his medical degree at Wits and then trained in Psychiatry at the University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne, where he became a Lecturer. In 1995 he joined the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Cape Town where he spent many years running Therapeutic and Addiction Units. He also has years of experience in research and teaching. A particular interest was the teaching and practice of Cognitive Behaviour Therapy, though more recently he has been strongly influenced by the Mindfulness movement, Motivational Enhancement and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy.

In 2007 Dr. Bothwell commenced private practice at Kenilworth Clinic and has offered his services to a number of other prominent addiction units.

Dr. Bothwell’s approach is integrative and involves the use of medication, psychotherapy, and when appropriate, a family approach and collaboration with other professionals.
